 STA ANNUAL CONFERENCE


This one-day landmark event brings together key opinion leaders and business professionals to explore the current state and future of Smart Transportation Infrastructures in a unique and dynamic atmosphere. It offers the opportunity to reflect on current issues, learn about new trends, and engage with key thought-leaders, decision-makers and practitioners from across the globe.

STA INNOVATION AWARDS


The ‘STA Innovation Awards’ honour global innovators that have decisively contributed to deploying Smart Transportation Infrastructures worldwide, and to improving the methods, technologies and standards associated with transportation infrastructures.

The Awards are given in two categories:

  • Person of the Year: highlighting the achievements of exceptional individual accomplishments and professional contributions to the industry.

  • Best Innovation Project or Solution: underscoring teamwork that is breaking the existing paradigms for transportation infrastructures.

2024 Awardees

Person of the Year: Mrs Emanuela Stocchi, Director of International Affairs at the Italian Association of Motorway and Tunnel Concessionaires (AISCAT),President of PIARC - World Road Association , Vice-Chair of the European Association of Operators of Toll Road Infrastructures (ASECAP) for her instrumental contributions to advance sustainable and efficient transportation solutions in Europe and beyond, with a specific focus on the EU taxonomy. Best Innovation Project: Madrid Regional Government for the development of the Special Civil Protection Plan against Floods complete work carried out after the floods in September 2023. Over 500 workers were mobilised to support affected communities, issuing six emergency orders and setting up 18 contracts within a week. Within a year, the Regional Government invested €42 million to repair multiple structures in Aldea del Fresno, along with 16 roads and transport infrastructure in the southwest.

2023 Awardees

Person of the Year: Mr. Mario Aymerich, Former Director for Environment and Regional Development, Projects Directorate, European Investment Bank (EIB) for his remarkable contributions to large-scale infrastructure projects in the transport, urban/regional development sectors and his involvement in PPT operations and Technical Risk Analysis.
Best Innovation Project: Anas Italy for the design of a concrete road safety barrier National Dynamic Barrier Anas (NDBA), invented by Eng. Nicola Dinnela, as the only international road safety barrier with a working width of 0.74 cm, is certified for two 38-ton heavy vehicle impacts ( TB 81). Following the NDBA’s invention, all Italian and international manufacturers had to adapt their products to the new safety standards.

2022 Awardees
Person of the Year: Mr. Carlos Azparrenformer Team Leader at the Technical Directorate of the Directorate General for Roads, Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) for his outstanding life-long contributions to bettering road safety in Spain and beyond through the conceptualisation and introduction of numerous standards (including also the legendary EN1317 standard at the time).
Best Innovation Project: Arena del Futuro, designed and constructed by Brebemi Spa, testing circuit for fully-operational electric roads for both electric and partly automated vehicles.

2021 Awardees
Person of the Year: Mr. Borja CarabanteDelegate for Environment and Mobility at Madrid City Council for his contributions to low congestion levels and remarkable traffic management within and surrounding Madrid.
Best Innovation Project: Magnetic Concrete Wireless Charging Solution, designed by Magment GmbH, an innovative solution to charge EVs in a more convenient way.

2020 Awardees
Person of the Year: Maria Cristina Maroldaformer Senior Policy Officer in charge of Research and Innovative Transport Systems, European Commission’s Directorate General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE).
Best Innovation Project: Big Data Mobility Platform, designed by Aleatica Labs, a platform focused on answering mobility questions in the long, medium and short-term scopes.

2019 Awardees
Person of the Year: (ex-aequo)Mr. Steve Phillips, Secretary-General at the Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR)  & Mr Gauthier Michaux, Head of Road Signalling at the Service Public de Wallonie – Mobilité & Infrastructures (Belgium).
Best Innovation Projects (ex-aequo)NOESIS: Novel Decision Support tool for Evaluating Strategic Big Data Investments in Transport and Intelligent Mobility Services & BIOREPAVATION: Innovation in Bio-Recycling of Old Asphalt Pavements.

2018 Awardees
Person of the Year: (ex-aequo): Dr. Aniceto Zaragoza, Director General, Spanish Cement Association (OFICEMEN) & Mr Dirk Van Loo, CEO, COPRO (Belgium).
Best Innovation Project and Solution: Sustainable Pavements & Railways Initial Training Network SUP&R ITN (Project) & Apertum, Real-Time Guide to Step-Free Mobility (Solution).

2017 Awardees
Person of the Year: (ex-aequo): Mr Andreas Rimkus, Member of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany & Prof Vittorio Giavotto, Professor Emeritus, Polytechnic University of Milano.
Best Innovation ProjectsSMEV: Digital Optimisation of Traffic Conditions for Emergency Vehicles.

2016 Awardees
Person of the Year: Dr. Alistair Clark,  Managing Director for Environment and Sustainability – European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Best Innovation Projects: (ex-aequo): FOTsis Project and TEV Project.

 

STA TECHNICAL ROUNDTABLES


These one-day events offer a review of the specific efforts carried out by the STA community to bring to reality the deployment of Smart Transportation Infrastructures connecting people and businesses across the world.
