Assessing the Safety Performance of CE-certified Road Restraint Systems (RRS)
Working towards a better European RRS market
As of January 2024, the Safety+ Excellence Labelling provides a fair, meaningful and objective assessment of the safety performance of CE-certified Road Restraint Systems (RRS) to public authorities and consumers.
It consists of a RRS Assessment Protocol which accepts/rejects and assigns "stars" to CE-marked RRS systems, based on documentary and video-graphic information.
The Safety+ Excellence Labelling incentivises and gives credit to those RRS manufacturers providing the highest degree of reliability to the market.
The existing Assessment Protocol covers safety barriers and parapets for the time being; crash cushions, transitions, terminals and motorcyclist protection devices will be included in future versions of the Protocol.
Our working principles
The Safety+ Excellence Labelling identifies those products legally available in the EU (CE-marked) with a higher level of quality and confidence for specific traffic conditions and applications.
The Labelling assesses RRS testing and certification processes, watching for errors, inconsistencies, malpractices and/or lack of reliability, in order to bring confidence to the market.
The Assessment Protocol reviews the technical features of the products; non-technical issues (such as commercial or political considerations) are not taken into account.
The Labelling (rating from 1 to 5 stars) is granted for a period of five years following an analysis of the ‘ITT report’ and relevant ‘CE marking’ documentation (tests reports, video recordings, certification documents...), including any additional information/evidence eventually requested.
