STA SUPPORTS IRF WORKSHOP ON ROAD NETWORK SAFETY MANAGEMENT (MÁLAGA, SPAIN, 30-31 MARCH 2017)

Road safety professionals from 9 different countries gathered in Málaga this 30 and 31 March 2017 to attend the IRF Road Network Safety Management Workshop. 11 internationally-renowned experts shared their views and best practices to better implement road safety measures. The course was aimed at delivering practical pathways to improved road safety performance through policies and measures that target recurrent road safety management and engineering weaknesses found in countries experiencing high growths in vehicle and motorcycle ownership.

During day 1, economic analysis, correct usage of accident statistical data, safety performance evaluation, and road network management, were discussed as the means to quantify the true burden of traffic injuries for societies and to identify cost-effective preventive measures for road safety. During the social dinner, Mayor of the city, Francisco de la Torre, thanked IRF’s representatives for choosing Málaga as the venue for that important event, expressed his commitment to continue promoting this kind of events and hoped IRF will be back soon in Málaga with another professional course.

On day 2, the Engineering safe roadsides & work zones: guidelines & case studies session allowed STA Members to share their knowledge and experience on safety of roadside and safety of works zones. Antonio Amengual (Director of Road Safety Division, Gonvarri MS Corporate) explained the necessary road safety measures to be implemented in the context of roadside hazards. Michael van der Vlist (Director of Road Safety & Business Development, Laura Metaal) discussed the importance of planned and structured approach when it comes to Work Zone protection. Patrick Asismus (STA Head of Training, President CEO, MOVEA) described the importance of the usage of standards to select effective vehicle restraint systems. Finally, during the Continuous monitoring of the network: guidelines & case studies session, Chair of STA TC3 (Smart Sustainability), César Bartolomé (Manager of the R&D Area, IECA) described the road pavements conditions and the monitoring and safety management tools for safer roads.
