STA WORK PLAN 2025 TO FOCUS ON DIGITISATION AND AI IN TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURES

The Smart Transportation Alliance (STA) held its first General Meeting of the year on 31 January 2025. STA Members united to review the achievements and major milestones of the past year, address several issues, approve decisions, and agree on the work and financial plan for 2025.

Dr José F. Papí, STA’s President, expressed his gratitude to all STA Members for their contributions and continuous support over the past 11 years since the founding of STA, which has been devoted to leading and supporting activities that improve methods, technologies, and standards associated with transport infrastructures.

A detailed presentation by Dr Papi highlighted STA’s growing performance and the successful visibility it achieved through various communication activities in the past year. Additionally, STA’s involvement in two EU-funded research projects, SCALE-UP and KEYSTONE, was showcased, among other activities.

On a technical aspect, Dr Papí provided updates on the Safety+ Excellence Labelling for Road Restraint Systems (RRS), the collaborative action between STA Members aiming to provide fair and objective assessments of the safety performance of CE-certified RRS for public authorities and consumers in Europe.

Looking ahead to 2025, STA Members unanimously agreed to maintain the momentum and continue the successful work already achieved.

The members have put together a joint pipeline of at least four publications and discussion papers on a wide range of topics, including:

  1. Digitisation of local roads, a paper that will be published soon;

  2. Transport research priorities supporting policy discussion at the European level;

  3. Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transport infrastructures;

  4. A Cross-Country Index, on a topic to be announced soon, making use of existing large databases.

In addition, all members agreed to continue working closely on the preparation and execution of research and innovation projects, helping to drive forward advancements that make transport infrastructures safer, more resilient, and more sustainable across Europe.

Finally, the STA Annual Conference and Innovation Awards 2025 will return to its headquarters this year and will take place in Belgium in Q3 or Q4 .

STA Members are looking forward to another year of collaboration, new experiences, and exciting opportunities!
