This special edition of the quarterly STA Newsletter focuses in detail on the upcoming 2023 STA Annual Conference & Innovation Awards. Registration for this event is free of charge and the conference takes place in Milan (Italy) on 26 October 2023.

The conference will take place at the CSI S.p.A Headquarters in Bollate, Milan (Italy), and at the Arena del Futuro in Chiari (Italy) on 26 October 2023, 09:00-19:00 CET. Attendance is free of charge & all participants will have the unique opportunity to visit test grounds, witness a live crash test, and engage with experts in transportation infrastructures.
A welcome coffee will be provided to all participants during the registration procedure. Additionally, a working lunch will be served after the Award Ceremony. The event will be rounded off with a farewell cocktail, offering a more casual opportunity to engage & exchange opinions.
For the convenience of all attendees, a free of charge bus transfer service will be provided to & from the CSI headquarters and to the Arena del Futuro.
Opening Sessions by the Italian Association of Toll Highways Concessionaires Companies & Spanish Road Association
Keynote speeches by Ms Emanuela Stocchi & Dr Elena de la Peña will provide insights into the application of the EU taxonomy system.
Ms Emanuela Stocchi, Director of International Affairs at the Italian Association of Toll Highways Concessionaires Companies (AISCAT) will kick off the 2023 STA Annual Conference by holding a keynote speech, clarifying the definition of the EU taxonomy and the requirements for transport & mobility experts.
Following, Dr Elena de la Peña, Deputy Director General for Technical Affairs at Spanish Road Association (AEC), will provide insights for an effective application of the EU taxonomy regulation for transportation infrastructures & a more sustainable future for transport. Below you can find a discussion paper on the new EU Taxonomy Classification System focusing on transportation infrastructures authored by Elena de la Peña.
The event and the speech are moderated by Mr José F. Papí (STA President & CEO at Etelätär Innovation).
Taxonomy Case Studies for Cement & Infrastructure Operations
The roundtable of the conference demonstrates how transport infrastructure can be operated in line with the taxonomy requirements.

Mr Ricardo Lobo, Head of R&D Department at Aleatica will present through case studies the necessity of the green taxonomy tool for future transport infrastructures.

Two Ground-Breaking Demo Visits
All participants will have the unique opportunity to visit the CSI S.p.A. HQ & the Arena del Futuro by Brebemi (Aleatica).
During the 2023 STA conference, all participants will have the unique opportunity to visit the CSI S.p.A, where Mr Fausto Mozzarelli, Automotive Business Unit Director of CSI S.p.A will present the CSI Safety Centre. Following his presentation, all participants will witness a real-world crash of circular and low carbon footprint safety barrier, presented by Mr Antonio Amengual, Director of Road Steel Engineering by Gonvarri Industries, and a demonstration of the CSI test ground.
A return bus transfer to the/from CSI Safety Centre will be offered, free of charge.
Attendees will have an outstanding chance to visit the Arena del Futuro, by Brebemi (Aleatica). Mr Ricardo Lobo, will present the Arena del Futuro circuit and a demonstration on how a toll road can be transformed into a shared seamless charging asset for electric vehicles will be offered.
2023 STA Innovation Awards Ceremony
Honouring global innovators who are making decisive contributions to deploying Smart Transportation Infrastructures.
Mr Mario Aymerich, Former Director of the Environment and Regional Development, Projects Directorate, European Investment Bank (EIB), will be awarded as the Person of the Year, for his remarkable contributions to large-scale infrastructure projects in the transport, urban/regional development sectors, and his involvement in PPT operations & Technical Risk Analysis.
National Dynamic Barrier Anas (Italy) will receive the Best Innovation Solution for the design of a concrete road safety barrier National Dynamic Barrier Anas (NDBA), invented by engineer Mr Nicola Dinnela, as the only international road safety barrier with a working width of 0.74 cm, who is certified for two 38-ton heavy vehicle impacts (TB 81).
