On 12-13 September 2018, STA organises its second road safety technical forum in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The objective of this event is to promote the exchange of knowledge and best practice on road safety in Africa, where poor standards and lack of strategic planning contribute every year to thousands of road fatalities.
STA Technical Committee on Smart Sustainability (TC3) launches a survey to the expert community at large

The STA Technical Committee on Smart Sustainability, TC3, chaired by Mr César Bartolomé, is carrying a survey to assess the opinion of our readers with regards to the sustainability of transportation infrastructures and smart cities.
The survey covers the different key aspects to achieve efficient, climate-resilient and socially-meaningful infrastructures.
The result of this survey will be presented during the 2018 STA Annual Conference & Innovation Awards (Brussels, 29 November 2018), where transportation and mobility experts share insights on future challenges for transportation infrastructures.

The Conference will be coupled with the award ceremony of the third edition of the ‘STA Annual Innovation Awards’. The Call for Entries for the “Person of the Year” and “Best Innovation Solution/Project” categories are now open and will close on 5 October 2018.

Welcome to the first SMARTI ETN newsletter issue!On 30 August, a startup plans to add its “smart pavement” to an intersection in an industrial corner of Denver. The company has encased assorted electronics within four slabs of concrete and will wedge those slabs into the road between a Pepsi Co. bottling plant and two parking lots.
We are excited to launch our newsletter which will inform you about our fellows and their projects, events, and relevant topics from the industry.

Asphalt not 'trashphalt'

Where the rubber meets the rail
Rail-highway crossings present a special set of safety challenges for transportation professionals.
Due to their vastly different mass and maneuverability, motor vehicles and trains have very different operational characteristics. Quite often, an inattentive driver who makes a mistake at an intersection is saved by the quick evasive actions of other drivers. Grade crossings offer far fewer crash-avoidance possibilities.
Lack of funding leaves world's roads in disrepair
In an age of austerity and budget cutbacks, the deadly bridge collapse in Genoa, Italy, has put the spotlight clearly on the lack of public funding for road networks across the globe, from France and Germany, to the United States and beyond.
