STA releases a 10-year innovation roadmap to bring the 'Highway of the Future' to reality

Following a detailed review of existing R&D efforts at the international level and bearing in mind the degree of market uptake of the technological solutions available today, a new STA Technical Report maps out a set of 116 R&D priorities bringing the Smart Roads concept defined in STA Discussion Paper 1/2015 to reality.

Each R&D priority is classified into an innovation topic (Smart and Green Road Construction & OperationRoad Infrastructure SafetyRoad Mobility & Modal Integration), and in addition has been scheduled in a 10-year roadmap (2015-2025) leading to market deployment.

ITS Cooperative Systems, a new challenge for STA

A new Sub-Committee on Cooperative Systems has been launched under STA Technical Committee 1 (Smart Mobility) to foster the deployment of Cooperative Systems in the Smart Transportation Infrastructures of the Future.

The third STA General Meeting of the present year took place last 25 June 2015. Following the progress review of the 2015 work plan, STA Members discussed the latest updates of the STA Annual Conference & Innovation Awards to be held in Brussels next 24 November 2015, and in addition agreed on the imminent release of new technical publications.

Location-based and traffic-related services will allow robust built-in data privacy and security solutions.

SmartFusion – Smart Urban Freight Solutions. 

Smartfusion is a public-private partnership (PPP) which will build upon the existing urban freight development strategies of three demonstration city-regions: Newcastle, Berlin and the Lombardy region. It will demonstrate smart urban freight solutions in urban-interurban supply chains.

Why cycling in the UK is so scary.

The 'Near Miss project' (supported by research hub Creative Exchange and bike light manufacturer Blaze) is the first to calculate a national rate for near misses. While a commuting cyclist in the UK might expect a cycling injury (most likely slight and self-treated) once every 20 years, they might be harassed by another road user every month, with a ‘very scary’ incident every week.

Benelux appeals for one tri-country rail network.

The Benelux Parliament has proposed the idea of combining the railways of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg into one “domestic” network. It also calls for the creation of a Benelux rail agenda, which would contain a number of concrete initiatives to improve the eastern and western railway connections between the Netherlands and Belgium, and between Brussels and Luxembourg.
